The 10 Best New Manga to Read in 2022

It’s Sunday Time and I’m back with another recommendation article for all weeb otakus out there. This time I have compiled the top 10 recommended manga from the manga serialized in 2020 to 2021. So without further ado let’s have a look. But before we dive in please note that I have excluded all top ONE-SHOT manga titles from the list. Maybe I’ll make another list based on only ONE-SHOTS and more.

Now on to the list:

10. Choujin X by Sui Ishida

In a world where humans with different abilities exist, the main character Tokio Kurohara and his best friend Higashi Azuma became Choujins. An extraordinary battle action by two people with a sense of justice is about to start.

Sui Ishida’s long-awaited latest work is finally here. It’s another dark fantasy that the author is good at. The mysterious, attractive characteristics and concoction of the two main protagonists are excellently laid out in the series, and they are neatly organized in one volume. Also, the powerful choujin battles are too interesting with the beautiful illustration.

Don’t miss it. It’s a work that gives you a sense of anticipation that you can look forward to the development of the future. For more, check out our up-to-date review of the series so far here :

9. Kaiju No. 8 by Naoya Matsumoto

In a world where monsters are mercilessly invading everyday life, the main character who could not become his ideal self
suddenly gets a great power. With his newfound powers, he aims to give his lifelong dream a final try.

Kaiju No. 8 is explosively expanding in popularity right now. In February the manga topped 70 million views on the Shonen Jump+ service. Last week it became the Fastest Shonen Jump+ Manga to surpass four million copies in circulation. And finally, It also won first place in the seventh Next Manga Awards (Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Taishō) in 2021. All in all, it’s the hottest manga right now! Go read it.

It is not something of a unique story, but it is very entertainingly constructed and attracted one by one. Each character has its own charm and liking. You’ll have your fun. Similar Manga like Fullmetal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man.

8. Uruwashi no Yoi no Tsuki (In the Clear Moonlit Dusk) by Yamamori Mika

Despite being a girl, Takiguchi Yoi, who is commonly known as “Prince”, is admired by all girls in school because of her smart behavior and the stylish way she carries herself. While she is popular with girls, she was shunned by boys because she looked way too cool as a guy. That is until she met Ichimura Kohaku, one of her Senpai at school, someone who’s also being called “prince”. The story of a man and a woman called “prince” begins to turn around!

I love the works of Mika Yamamori, and this new issue certainly didn’t disappoint. It was really a very satisfying work with beautiful design and delicate backgrounds and the expression of facial expressions were also wonderful!

There are currently up to 2 volumes, so please read them if you are interested! It’s an amazing cute romantic comedy that is fun and makes your heart squeeze in love!

7. Sakamoto Days by Yuto Suzuki

Taro Sakamoto, a plump man who runs a shop in the town. His true identity however is a former and legendary hitman who was feared by villains and admired by assassins. But that’s all from the past. He is now retired, gained weight, and has a wife and kid. The ultimate family man he was becoming until one day his former rivals and partners came back for revenge. The situation has become dire. How will he protect his family and everyone from this danger now ?

Sakamoto Days has a fairly mundane setting, but thanks to the cheerful badass hero and the characters around him, it feels bright for the world view. Gag and seriousness, past and present, friendships and friends. It’s all there and it’s all in the best balance.

You should really try it out. It’s a new kind of neo-action swashbuckler where battle and comedy intersect.

6. Blue Box ( Ao no Hako ) by Kōji Miura

Taiki Inomata, who belongs to the boys’ badminton club, is in love with Chinatsu Kano, a senior in the women’s basketball club. Do these sports-crossed lovers have a chance?

Surprisingly a rare sports-based rom-com work from Shonen Jump. Although there are sports manga with romance elements in them, but this work in particular looks a bit interesting. It progresses in parallel, such as getting to know each other through sports and growing on the basis of love. Not only are the elements of love and sports mixed so well, but they also enhance each other in the most beautiful way possible, so as you read it, you’ll be drawn in more and more, and before you know it, you’ll be able to grasp the depths of your heart.

Do give it a try. It is an interesting manga regardless of gender. I think if we give it more time, it will likely become one of the promising sports titles in the future.

5. Trillion Game by Riichiro Inagaki and Ikegami Ryoichi

Earn 1,000,000,000,000 $,
Get everything in this world!

The story of charismatic genius × IT engineer genius and how they start a business from scratch and become billionaires!!

Riichiro Inagaki x Yusuke Murata (Eyeshield 21), Riichiro Inagaki x Boichi (Dr. Stone), and now it’s Riichiro Inagaki x Ikegami Ryoichi. Oh my goodness!

The strongest lineup we ever got in the last few years. I read it with full expectations. The best from the beginning! The story is always on, and it fascinates the development that readers are looking for with great image and composition. If you are interested, please do not hesitate. It’s by two of the super veteran and front-line mangaka of the industry who are too good at catching people’s hearts.

4. Bokura no Chikyuu no Arukikat (Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide) by Mone Sorai

Around the world, a journey that changes love and life.

Asahi Suzumura, who quit his job for some reason, and Mitsuki Sayama, a freelance cameraman set out on a journey saying, “Let’s get married if we can do it around the world.” The destination of Volume 1 is Thailand, India, and Georgia the Asian countries while the Volume 2 explore the journey around Europe – Finland, Germany, France, and Italy!

A story about a round-the-world trip between a cameraman and a former system engineer. I really love it! !! !! !! Travel, gourmet, and BL … I feel like I’ve never had a good combination of these three! So it was an amazing experience for me. I highly recommend it. Foreign cultures and encounters, lively and realistic emotional depiction, relationships with people and walking scenery of the trip all are really attractive and enjoyable.

Don’t turn your face away just because it has a BL tag on it. It’s basically a travel manga that doesn’t go too deep into yaoi manga culture. You’ll be fine.

3. Hirayasumi by Shinzou Keigo

Hiroto Ikuta, 29 years old, part-time worker. No regular job, no lover, should it be normal ? He is a carefree young man who has no real worries about the future. One day he inherits an old house from the neighborhood granny and started living there leisurely with his 18-year-old cousin Natsumi, who came to study art in Tokyo from Yamagata.

On average, Hirayasumi may seem like a simple story that’s poor or sloppy, but trust me when I say this it’s one of the if not the most amazing “feel good” slice of life manga of recent times. The precious peaceful life, the warm scenery of the city, and the facial expressions of the people living there – everything has a feeling of life and a sense of transparency as if you are profane, and it is comfortable.

It is recommended by people like: –

  • Inio Asano (Solanin, Oyasumi Punpun)
  • Masakazu Ishiguro (Tengoku Daimakyou) Misaki Takamatsu (Skip to Loafer)
  • Retto Tajima (Mizu wa Umi ni Mukatte Nagareru)
  • Taiyou Matsumoto (Ping Pong)
  • Yama Wayama (Muchuu sa, Kimi ni)

2. Sousou no Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End) by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe

A story about an elf mage named Frieren, who has lived for more than 1000 years, traveling again in the “world after the Demon King’s extermination” and confirming the feelings of harmonious interaction between imagination and understanding and her own growth that she had not noticed in the past.

To be honest loneliness between races with different lifespans is a common theme in fantasy adventure stories nowadays, but what makes it unique are the exquisitely expressed frames of the scene of the journey that progresses in a non-rigid tone, which is not only easy to read and simply interesting but also makes you think about how life should be. Furthermore, I think Kanehito Yamada is really a stable writer. This work is skillfully composed, and the pellucidity of the outline revealed at the end with a good mystery has also a sense of a neatly organized story. In addition to those, I should also mention the illustrations and background depiction by Abe Tsukasa, above all, the scenarios are well elaborated and the cute expression and design are also attractive.

You should really try it out. The manga received the 25th annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and 14th Manga Taishō in 2021.

1. Oshi no Ko (My Idol’s Child) by Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari

What would it look like if you take every popular theme out there and pour it in a single work and create a whole new story ?
I think it’ll probably look like Oshi no Ko. Reincarnation, comedy, drama, mystery, tragedy, idol, actor, everything in a single story, and what’s more interesting is that how it balances all these with an amazing pacing and twist combo at every single volume.

The manga is also too good at embracing emotions and characterization! It’s a wonderfully illustrated sad but beautiful story of the entertainment world that confronts us not only with a commercial, cultural, and media-related theme that uniquely explore the darkness of idols, fans, and the entertainment world with occult developments but also demonstrates, in both dramatically original and profound manner, to what extent we have become fundamentally conditioned by the influences of these industries.

It’s a must-read manga. Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love Is War) is in charge of the original work and Mengo Yokoyari, the author and illustrator behind the manga Scum’s Wish is in charge of drawing. In August 2021, Oshi no Ko ranked 1 in the Next Manga Award in the print category. So give it a go and if you are a fan of Kaguya Sama, then also check out these best Chika Fujiwara quotes from Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai – Tensai-tachi no Ren’ai Zunōsen.
