Cherry Magic: Anime Plot, Cast, and Everything Else We Know

Yū Toyota’s mega-popular BL manga ‘Sanjūsai made Dōtei Da to Mahōtsukai ni Nareru rashii’ (Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!), commonly known as “Cherry Maho” is finally getting an anime adaptation by Studio Satelight, Inc.

In addition to the tv anime announcement, congratulatory comments and illustrations have arrived from the manga creator Yū Toyota!

Yoshiko Okuda (Kakuriyo Yadomeshi, Your Lie in April animation director, Say “I love you” character designer) is directing the anime at Studio Satelight (Fairy Tail, Log Horizon, Hellsing Ultimate).

Tomoko Konparu (Blue Spring Ride, Nodame Cantabile, NANA, Kimi no Todoke) is penning the series scripts while Takahiro Kishida (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Haikyu, Durarara, Btooom!) will be in charge of character design.

Square Enix Manga & Books licensed the manga, and the story goes like this:

By turning 30 while still a virgin, Kiyoshi Adachi, a 30-year-old office worker, has somehow acquired the magic of reading minds through physical contact. Confused by his unexpected power, when he meets Yuichi Kurosawa, the most handsome guy in the company, he suddenly realizes that he is in love with him…! Bewildered by the voice he hears in his heart and someone’s affection for the first time, Adachi finally starts to experience all kinds of feelings & emotions.

The series author, Yū Toyota, started as a shoujo manga artist after winning the Debut Excellence Award at the 2010 Hana to Yume Rookie of the Year Award. After that, she started focusing more on boys’ love manga. And then one day she finally came up with this idea. The idea was simple yet captivating – the protagonist gains the ability to read people’s minds but with a unique twist.

The manga began serialization digitally in 2018 by Square Enix Pixiv in Japanese. But later, it received a lot of attention & got so popular that the chapters were later released in twelve tankōbon volumes, with the 12th one being released on 22 July 2023.

In addition to the popularity among the BL fans, it even received positive favorable feedback from the critics, so much so that it ranked first in the “Recommended BL comics 2019 selected by bookstores nationwide”.

Furthermore, during the exciting Anime Expo 2019, Square Enix finally revealed that in 2020, they’d be bringing the series to English-speaking fans for the first time ever as their debut BL Manga series.

In the same year, outside of printed or digital periodical publications, the series finally got attention & recognition in audio-visual formats.

In 2019, a drama CD was released by Frontier Works. The cast included Atsushi Abe as Kiyoshi Adachi and Takuya Sato as Yuichi Kurosawa.

In the next year, from October 2020, a TV drama version of the series started airing on TV Tokyo. The cast includes Eiji Akaso as Kiyoshi Adachi and Keita Machida as Yuichi Kurosawa.

And in 2022, the manga also inspired a live-action Thai series starring famous actors Tawan Vihokratana and Thitipoom Techaapaikhun.
