Junji Ito’s UZUMAKI anime reveals a new teaser trailer, Date and More

Adult Swim Youtube channel revealed on Tuesday that the production committee of the animation work “Uzumaki” based on the manga “Uzumaki” by Junji Ito has delayed the anime’s premiere date from 2021 to October 2022 due to Covid-19 and various circumstances.

In the video, Director Nagahama conveyed the message and apology to the viewers and said ” I ask for your patience just a little more..I’m doing my best not to disappoint the fans of Junji Ito, so please look forward to it.”

The announcement also revealed a new visual and hinted at new staff members for the anime.

The previously announced cast members include:

Hiroshi Nagahama (Mushishi, Detroit Metal City, The Flowers of Evil) is directing the anime at Studio Drive Production I.G. USA and famous Canadian-American avant-garde saxophonist Colin Stetson (Red Dead Redemption 2, Hereditary, The War Show) is in charge of the series music composition.

Viz Media published the volumes in English from February 2001 to August 2002, and they describe the story as:

“Kurozu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. It manifests itself in small ways: seashells, ferns, whirlpools in water, whirlwinds in air. And in large ways: the spiral marks on people’s bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi’s father, the voice from the cochlea in your inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurouzu-cho are pulled ever deeper, as if into a whirlpool from which there is no return…”

The manga was serialized irregularly from the 7th issue of 1998 to the 39th issue of 1999 in Shogakukan‘s “Weekly Big Comic Spirits”. The series was adapted into two video games and a Japanese live-action film directed by Higunchinsky on February 11, 2000.
The manga also has a moving manga cartoon version (video with voice and special effects added to the manga) which was distributed on d-video powered by BeeTV on October 20th, 2014. The series contains a total of 19 episodes featuring Kirie Goshima as Chika Anzai, Hidekazu Saito as Wataru Hatano. The theme song was done by Anna Tsuchiya. Here’s the first episode. Take a look.
